Lion
Year 2006-2007 Ken Ward has stayed on as president, when
the V.P deferred owing to personal reasons.
The
Sight first campaign is continuing a-pace. This year we
awarded a Melvin Jones award to Steve Gilbert, for all
his work both in office and as a club member. We hosted
a district meeting for 116B which was successful.
Other
Melvin Jones Fellowships were awarded to local businessmen
Jens Fulda, for almost singlehandedly financing the computer
scheme and Paul Ruane for his Stalwart support of the
club over many years
The
Lion Year 2005-2006 saw Ken Ward back in the "hot"
seat: he was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship for his
work over the last 12 years on the night of his inauguration.
Without any specially planned programs for this year we
managed to complete the project to install a lift in a
disabled boy's house - a project started in Paul's prsidential
year. The computers for schools project carried on - delayed
due to the lack of security in some of the outlying schools.
We joined the "Sight first 2" project as a "Model
Club". That Christmas we were able to send four thousand
dolars to the SF2 thanks to various club fundraisers.

2004-05
Paul Marley has undertaken a second term as Lions President
and continues to drive the Computers for kids project forward,
as well as some plans of his own. watch this space!
Outlining the challenges, Paul said: “Well I came
back for more - first second time president! During the
year I want to build on the already great ties that have
been forged with the local social services and to find more
local needy cases to serve, as well as to build our membership.
We will be pursuing a project for the provision of musical
instruments for the talented young musicians of the area
and we will go on with our funding of the children of Kärnobyl
, schooling in Nepal, and help to the Warrington children
who visit us each year. To name but a few ongoing projects.” |
Steve
Gilbert had the mantle
of responsibility in 2003-04. He made great in-roads, liasing
with social services and other town hall departments, to
identify where best help could be given locally..
Steve
pioneered one of the biggest schemes we have ever undertaken, which
is the provision of fully equiped computer rooms for all
the junior schools in the area. A good number of which have
been completed. Steve has his own business,a powerboat training
school, and speaks at least three languages. |
Taking
over from Paul,we had Haydn Williams, a fiercely proud
Welshman. In Haydn's year, we completed a project with
the local authorities in creating a safe play area for
the local children. Haydn was the club choirmaster for
a number of years, organising our annual carol singing
fund raiser at Christmas. He was treasurer and membership
secretary, as well as tail twister, as part of his club
service.
Haydon,
a former college lecturer at home in Wales, lived in Los
Gigantes long enough to have become part of village folklore.
Hadyn worked for many yers in the tourism industry.
Sadly
in December 2005 he was found dead in bed at his home
in Los Gigantes. He was 59.

Paul
Marley took over the reins from Ken. Paul's year enabled
us to sponser a child suffering with multiple sclerosis,
after having reaped the rewards of a fund raising campaign,
raised by helping the rowers during the second trans -Atlantic
challenges of Sir Chey Blyth, rowing race.Paul has his own
printing /graphics and marketing business in the area. He
is also the clubs tame computer "buff". |
Len
Handed over to Ken Ward. Ken was another Ex-Tenerife Sur
Lion ,who
had transferred to the club,to help with a bit of experience, when
the club was formed. Ken had been secretary for some years.Tail
twister, lion tamer, hes had a go at it all. currently he
is "having a go "at being Chief of Zone, and still
very active in club matters.Ken has his own business erecting
roller shutters and sun blinds. "The blind man".
|
Len
Parker, the original" guiding Lion",wanted to have
the centenary year, after having let the newer lions cut
their teeth on Lionism. Len completed the life-craft project
and handed it over to the mayor with the clubs compliments, for
the local authorities to man and maintain. It was a great
accomplishment for him and the club. A great fund raiser
and arm twister on behalf of the club. Thankfully still
an active Lion |
Mark
Sharp followed Ron. As vice president Mark had been very
hard working and active. It was in his year as president,
that one of our greatest achievements came to fruition.
This was the purchase of a sea going safety craft for the
local area. This has seen much service and has so far saved
some twenty lives in the local waters. Marks business affairs, during
his year, obliged him to stand down, before completing it. |
Ron
Batchelor succeeded Robin.A retired policeman from Leicestershire,Ron
was a really " larger than life" character. He
was a person of fewer words than deeds and got "stuck
in "to all he touched. Shortly after completing his
year, Ron changed life style by becoming, what we euphemistically
call, a gentleman farmer, in Andulacia. |
Ray
handed over the presidency to Robin Mullarkey, who was a
retired businessman from East Anglia. Robin, being retired, put
a lot of energy and hard work into the clubs activities.
His year was sadly overshadowed by the poor health of his
wife,Kay,who nobly insisted that he complete his term of
office, while she awaited treatment for cancer, she died soon
after. Robin has since retired from the club |
The
clubs first president was Ray Dobson, who actually served
as president for 18 months. This being the last half of
the Lion year 1994-5, and then the Lion year 1995-6.Ray
was a local entrepreneur, who had been here in Tenerife for
several years. He had worked in the timeshare industry, until
starting in business for himself as a restauranteur . Ray,
for business reasons, has now left us,and is living and working
in Murcia,on the Spanish mainland. |

The
club was formed in January 1995,after the efforts of Lion
Len Parker, who was,at that time an active Lion in the Tenerife
Sur club.Tenerife Sur was the "parent " club,
Len the " guiding " Lion.
