Saturday 15th October saw Santiago Del Teide Lions Club celebrating their President´s Night, with a magnificent Buffet Dinner and Cabaret evening at El Marques in Puerto Santiago.

Invited guests were Deputy Mayor Inocencio Doble and his wife Remedios and Legal Advisor to the Council, Antonio Espinosa and his wife Alexandra.

The evening was a huge success, with 89 guests in attendance.
Entertainment was provided by artist and showman Gavin Nicholas, who had many of the audience in tears of laughter and music to get everyone dancing came from the superb saxophonist, guitarist and singer, Stu McCoy.
It was a perfect evening for departing President, Steve Gilbert to hand the reigns to incoming President, Ken Ward.

Apart from the traditional welcome to all guests, Steve Gilbert was delighted to award the coveted “Lion of the Year” plaque to Terry Hill for his unstinting support and dedication to the work we do.

During the evening, brief speeches were made by Steve Gilbert, Ken Ward, Inocencio Doble and John Brookhouse from Las Rosas.
All were thanked for giving us such fantastic support and Inocencio Doble was pleased to announce, that after the 20th November General Election in Spain, the Ayuntamiento will be giving the Lions Club use of a local in Puerto Santiago. This will be set up as a store where people can donate unwanted items, that can then be sold on to generate more income to assist many local families experiencing difficulty in these harsh economic times.

It was announced by Steve Gilbert that during the last year, the Lions Club has raised 5,600 euros to put into their Food Voucher Scheme. It is hoped that with this new source of generating income, we will be able to support many more local people in need.

Deputy Mayor, Inocencio Doble addressed everyone in Spanish to give his personal thanks for all the help we were able to offer. His speech was ably translated by Jamie Gilbert, much to the relief of the majority of the audience.

All guests agreed that the evening represented tremendous value at only 30 euros per head and many are now eager to attend the next event, which is scheduled to be Charter Night in the early part of next year.

Ana Martin, Resort Manager for EL marques, was warmly thanked for the excellent service of all her staff in making this evening such a success and once again demonstrated that this venue provides a superb setting for this type of occasion.

On Saturday February 5th 2011 just over 100 members and guests attended Lion’s Club Santiago del Teide Charter Night at El Marques, Puerto de Santiago. One special visitor was Ray Dobson, a founder member of this branch of the “Lions”.

The compare for the evening was Fred Dudman whose first job was to have all the members and guests sitting down for the hot and cold buffet. As with other events at this location the guests had a very good selection to choose from. The food was well appreciated and a big vote of thanks goes out to the staff for their hard work.

Once the meal was finished it was cabaret time and the first act was George Peña. The New Yorker kept everyone entertained for just over one hour. His comedy bridged the gap between American and British humour plus some very powerful singing. At the end of his act he was called back for more by a very happy audience.

Then Steve Gilbert, President of the Lions Club Santiago del Teide, gave a very short speech and drew attention to a new scheme to help some 50 families who are having a very hard time here in Santiago del Teide. Some of the money raised over Christmas has been placed in a voucher scheme for the purchase of food and is controlled by the local council. The President then proposed a toast to all guests. This toast was responded by Frank Pope who proposed Lions Club Santiago del Teide.

Then followed a currency note draw, name written on a note and placed in the pot. The winning note was Chris Goode who received a large basket of wines and spirits. All money raised from this draw will go to the new voucher scheme.
The evening was rounded off by music from Tuxedo Knights and Glam Slam which very quickly had everyone on the dance floor. This completed a very successful evening.

In the last few years, through the generosity of the residents and visitors to this community, we have been able to sponsor hundreds of cataract operations in the Third World.

This year, with the Economic Crisis that has had such a devastating effect on so many people in this corner of Tenerife, the Lions Club of Santiago del Teide is concentrating on raising funds simply to buy food to supplement the meals that many local parents are struggling to provide for their families. Many of them are trying to survive on as little as Euros 100 per month!

Most of us have lost someone dear to us and it is at this time of year that they are uppermost in our thoughts.

The Lions Club of Sanitago del Teide would like to invite you all to sponsor a bulb on their “Tree of Light” and dedicate it to the memory of that special person. It will remain illuminated (weather permitting), every night until the end of the festive season.

Each bulb costs only Euros 5. All money raised will go directly to purchasing those much needed groceries.

PLEASE TAKE YOUR DONATION TO ANY OF THESE COLLECTING POINTS:-
The Green Corner bar – Los Gigantes
Restaurant Asturias – Los Gigantes
Simple Simons – Los Gigantes
Paul Ruane – Los Gigantes
Los Gigantes Diving Centre – Marina, Los Gigantes
Megatone – El Varadero

We had a great start to our Christmas programme on November 18th 2010 when some 80 members and guests went to Puerto de la Cruz for an afternoon of shopping at the La Villa shopping centre followed by a Christmas buffet and entertainment at the “The Majestic”, the new home of “Bitter and Twisted.

The meal was superb and the glamour and slick changes of the fabulous act had everyone laughing until their sides ached.

So it’s a big vote of thanks to Lions member Mary for arranging it all, and to “Bitter and Twisted for all their hard work which resulted in a profit of Euros 1,300 for Lions charities.

In July each year Lions clubs around the world celebrate the start of a new Lions year, and on 3 July the Santiago del Teide club held its President’s Night at El Marques in Puerto Santiago, attended by Lions members and about fifty guests.

On President’s Night the president hands over power to a new president elected by the club. Outgoing President Richard Dobinson thanked all Lions members and supporters for their help during a year when the international financial situation made the work of the club more difficult and yet all the more essential. Much was achieved, including ongoing projects (for example, supporting the schooling of children in Nepal), and one-off projects (putting a much needed lift in a psychiatric home). The club also continued to serve the local community by helping individuals and families in need. He announced that the Santiago del Teide club had actually increased its membership during the year by fifty percent, a remarkable achievement.

The Outgoing President then handed out a number of awards to Lions members, chief among them being the Lion of the Year Award which this year went to Lizzie Herrick. He also presented a bouquet of flowers to Anna of El Marques for her help in organising the evening so effectively.

Incoming President Steve Gilbert thanked Richard for his superb efforts during the previous year, and said that we should expect another difficult year. He stressed that the Lions would continue to put every effort into raising money and using it for the good of the community.

A euro-note draw was held to raise much-needed funds. Vince, who won the main prize, generously returned it to be auctioned at a later time.

El Marques put on a sumptuous buffet, and the waiters were remarkably attentive despite the competing attraction of the Spain/Paraguay football match in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Many quests remarked on the quality of the food and service, to which a Spanish victory seemed the perfect accompaniment.

The night’s entertainment was of a particularly high standard. During the early evening diners were serenaded by Stu McCoy, an amazing saxophonist and vocalist. Then Traveller, a newly formed band, entertained with an eclectic mix of great music. Traveller promised ‘a mind-blowing musical journey’ and that is exactly what they delivered. Most of those present were hearing them for the first time and were greatly impressed – this is a band that will go far. Towards the end of the evening Stu McCoy returned and soon had many out of their seats and onto the dance floor, making a fantastic close to a delightful evening.

The evening of 3 July was notable on two points – firstly for a Spanish victory in South Africa as the team moved closer to winning the World Cup, and secondly for a successful President’s Night that saw the Santiago del Teide Lions Club continue its (if one dare say) even more demanding mission to give help wherever it is needed both locally and internationally. Click here for more photos

Linda’s career background is in newspaper, advertising and administration. She has a wide range of interests including gardening, cooking, cross-stitch, music and dancing, and reading. Having been involved for many years with voluntary work in the UK, she now wishes to give her time and energies to the Lions International Club to raise funds and support not only the people of Tenerife but also on an international level.

Terry began his working life as an Anglican priest in Hereford, and it was while serving as chaplain to the SAS that he gained an interest in military history. When he left the Church he became curator of The Queen’s Royal Lancers regimental museum in Belvoir Castle. Terry now writes full time on military history from the Crimean War to the Second World War, primarily for UK and US readers, although his best known work in Spanish is El Valle de la Muerte. He has continued his pastoral interests by writing non-religious marriage and funeral ceremonies, and he acts as celebrant at these when required.
